This past weekend, the healthcare informatics community, as well as the ICT industry lost Steven Huesing, a pioneer and community builder.
Although professionally trained as a cost and management accountant, Steven found his calling in the healthcare technology sector. He was at the forefront of the movement to employ information technology to improve the lives of patients and improve hospital efficiency.
Steven’s experiences in the healthcare informatics industry were wide-ranging. Starting in 1964 he held senior executive, CFO, and CIO positions in healthcare facilities, government and voluntary organizations. He was the founding president of COACH: Canada’s Healthcare Informatics Association and the co-founder of CHITTA, the Canadian Healthcare Information Technology Trade Association. Steven served on the boards of many voluntary organizations as well as editorial boards of academic journals and conference proceedings. At ITAC, he is credited with bringing CHITTA and ITAC together to create ITAC Health, a strong unified voice for the healthcare informatics sector.
He was also the Editor and publisher of Healthcare Information Management & Communications Canada, a respected Canadian industry magazine, which has, since 1987, served as the official journal of COACH, Canada’s Health Informatics Association and ITAC Health.
Among his many other activities, Steven always found the time to nurture young scholars. In 1984, he established the COACH Founding President’s Award for students of the University of Victoria’s School of Health Information Science. In 2002, he was honoured by the University of Victoria with an annual scholarship in his name to qualified Canadian health informatics students.
The ITAC community sends it condolences to the Huesing family.
